Soft Machine are a British progressive rock band from Canterbury, currently consisting of John Marshall, Roy Babbington, John Etheridge and Theo Travis.

Formed in 1966, the band released their debut self-titled album in 1968, followed by ‘Volume Two’ in 1969, ‘Third’, in 1970 and ‘Fourth’ in 1971, which was the first of the band’s fully instrumental albums. ‘Fifth’ was released in 1972, followed by ‘Six’ in 1973, ‘Seven’ in 1973, before the band changed musical direction again when ‘Bundles’, was released in 1975. ‘Softs’ released in 1976 was the band’s last official album, though 1981’s ‘Land of Cockayne’ was also released under the name. Various former members of the band formed Soft Ware in 1999, later changing their name to Soft Works, and released the album, ‘Abracadabra’ in 2003. In 2004 Soft Machine Legacy was formed, releasing a self-titled album in 2006, ‘Steam’ in 2007 and ‘Burden of Proof’ in 2013. In 2015 the band returned to the Soft Machine name.
