The Gritterman Tickets for Theatre Shows in 2024/2025Last Updated: 25 Sep 2018 3:28pm
Following the band's split in 2017, The Maccabees front man Orlando Weeks has set off on a solo children's book project called The Gritterman.
The Gritterman's job involves selling ice cream in the summer, yet his real passion is gritting the roads during the winter snowy months, making it safe for residents. The turning point comes when the local council writes to tell The Gritterman that his services are no longer required, and we follow our hero on his final night of doing the job that he loves. Not just a tale about retirement, but it possesses an elevating charm that will allow it to have a cross-generational appeal for both children and adults. It offers low-key insights into everyday human nature in a manner that’s both matter-of-fact and unusually lyrical. Weeks writes, “Being alone and loneliness aren’t the same thing at all". Weeks has written the book, illustrated it himself, and created an album to play alongside. Now, he brings The Gritterman to life at live performances at London's Union Chapel and Manchester's Albert Hall. The show will feature an orchestra, choir, and even Paul Whitehouse playing The Gritterman himself.
