The Who Reveal 'Quadraphenia: Director's Cut' Boxset Details and Tracklist

The Who fans will be treated with an extremely special director’s cut of their iconic 1973 album Quadrophenia this November, featuring dozens of special features and goodies for all you mods out there.

Quadrophenia is one of the most widely recognised albums of The Who’s career because of its classic depiction of mod culture, its renowned imagery and the magnificent music. The album is hugely significant in popular culture, influencing many other artists, musicians and film-makers – inspiring the classic 1979 British film by Franc Roddam and the UK ‘mod revival’ of the 1970s.

It is so influential and iconic in fact, that it will receive a massive revamping for 2011 - which will see Who fans getting a re-mastered version of the original album, two discs containing 25 previously unreleased tracks written by Pete Townsend himself, including tracks that didn’t make it on to the final press of the original Quadrophenia LP, and a DVD quality 5.1 surround sound mix of eight tracks which have been specifically remixed and mastered for optimum 5.1 sound quality.

And for those true, hardcore Quad fans, there’ll be a 100 page, 13,000 word essay by Townsend detailing the creation of the album and the relatively new technology the band used to produce it, as well as a background to the central character, Jimmy.

If that wasn’t enough, this super-deluxe edition even has a track-by-track guide to the 25 demos that are included, a studio diary, a book showcasing handwritten lyrics and memorabilia, a 7inch vinyl copy of 5.15/Water, and even a large poster.

There’s no denying that this is THE ultimate package for Who fans across the world – and Townsend explains that the 2011 deluxe reissue edition was produced due to continued support of the original album.

“This 2011 revisit to The Who’s 1973 Quadrophenia recording is inspired by current and continuing interest in the project,” explains Townshend. “The Who performed a concert version of the piece at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010 for the Teenage Cancer Trust with excellent reviews, and the success of that event led to the prospect of a Who tour in 2012 based on the album. The last such tour was between 1996-1997.

“The time has come for me and my team to honour ‘Quadrophenia’ with a carefully presented package that features examples of the impact surround sound (quadrophonic) would have on the music, to remaster the vinyl mixes, and to collect and restore my demos. I am also going to try to shed some light on the way ‘Quadrophenia’ came about, and how it was inspired by events in my life in 1970 and 1971 when I scribbled or typed the very first notes and lyrics for some of the songs that made it onto the final record.”
