The Band's Levon Helm Loses Cancer Fight Aged 71

The Band's Levon Helm has sadly passed away at age 71, following a lengthy battle with throat cancer.

The star was first diagnosed with the condition in 1998, and was said to be entering the 'final stages' of his battle just a couple of days ago. He died at a New York hospital surrounded by family and friends, according to The Band's manager Barbara O'brien, and tributes have been pouring in from fans and fellow musicians across the world following his passing away.

Among the messages was a statement from superstar Bob Dylan, who toured with The Band throughout the 60s and 70s. He wrote via his website: “He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I'm going to miss him, as I'm sure a whole lot of others will too.”

His bandmate Gareth Hudson also left a message, writing: “Thank you for 50 years of friendship and music. No more sorrows, no more troubles, no more pain. He went peacefully to that beautiful marvellous wonderful place. Levon, I'm proud of you.”

Our thoughts go out to Helm's friends and family – RIP.
