Google has finally unveiled it’s highly-anticipated hush-hush music streaming service, that aims to rival other platforms such as Spotify or Rdio.
Dubbed Google Play Music All Access, it was unveiled at the 6th annual Google I/O developer’s conference last night, with 6,000 people watching on. The service runs in similar fashion to it’s competitors; it offers users millions upon millions of tracks available to stream for a monthly subscription fee, which has been set (in the US) at $9.99 a month - though you’ll get it at a discount price of $7.99 a month should you sign up before June 30th.
Described by the company as ‘radio without rules’, it’s available for those in the US to use straight away, while it’s currently unknown how long it’ll be before it becomes available to the rest of the world. The subscription prices for the rest of the world are also still yet to be set, though they most likely won’t differ too much from US prices, if they do differ at all.
Features of the service include being able to stream/play tracks the user has previously bought as well as from it’s library, which in turn can be placed into a playlist alongside tracks they stream from Google. There’s also a feature called Explore which will give users personalised recommendations based on their music taste. Unlike Spotify, though, there is no free play or ad-based free play tier, and you’ll have to pay up after your 30-day free trial expires.
BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor has commented on the launch of the service, and told Music Week:
“Streaming is the fastest growing part of the £330m digital music sector in Britain, with over than a million paying subscribers already and millions more enjoying free and ad-supported music. The entry of a player with the reach of Google will persuade many more consumers to experience having millions of songs to play instantly on their phone, tablet or PC.”
