Jay Z Set To Drop Surprise Album On July 4

Monday, 17 June 2013 Written by Huw Baines

Jay Z will release a surprise new album on July 4.

The hip hop giant's 12th studio record is called 'Magna Carta Holy Grail', and is set to feature an all-star cast. The album was announced during game five of the NBA finals on Sunday night, with a Samsung advert running during a game between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs.

In the commercial, Jay Z is seen working alongside long-time collaborator Rick Rubin, as well as Pharrell Williams and Timbaland. "The album is about this duality," he says during the ad. "Of how do you navigate your way through this whole thing, through success and through failures, and remain yourself?"

The album is set to be dropped to one million Samsung Galaxy customers 72 hours prior to its general release, through an app designed for the smartphone.
