HMV Launch New Digital Download Service

Thursday, 17 October 2013 Written by Jon Stickler

HMV have launched a brand new digital download service as the company strives to recover from the brink of closure.

Hoping to compete with iTunes and Amazon, HMV are battling to find a foothold in the current digital music market. When launched, HMV Digital, powered by 7 Digital, will allow users to download content from the HMV digital record store, and tunes can be saved into iTunes and Windows Media player.

James Coughlan, Head of Digital at the company, said: "For the first time, music lovers have the ability to experience the traditional feel of HMV on the high street and have the option to discover and build a digital music collection, delivered and managed across devices, from HMV, the Home Of Entertainment."

The HMV app is the first non-iTunes-based service on Apple's iOS platform to allow the purchase of digital music downloads through a native app experience. The app scores another global win as the only service other than iTunes to offer MP3 pre-orders on mobile platforms.

HMV went into administration back in January, with many stores and jobs lost. The company has since been rescued by financial restructuring group Hilco and are currently in transition between owners. The HMV digital music store and app will be part of a new HMV website that will launch next week.
