Motown Great Jimmy Ruffin Dies Aged 78

Thursday, 20 November 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Jimmy Ruffin, the Motown star behind What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted, has died aged 78.

The vocalist’s daughter, Philicia Ruffin, confirmed the news in a statement issued to the Associated Press on behalf of her family.

"Jimmy Ruffin was a rare type of man who left his mark on the music industry. My family in its entirety is extremely upset over his death. He will truly be missed. We will treasure the many fond and wonderful memories we all have of him."

Ruffin was born in Collinsville, Mississippi in 1936 and was the older brother of David, who would go on to front the Temptations. He later signed with Motown and broke the top 10 in the US and UK with What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted in 1966.

In 1980, Hold On (To My Love) repeated the trick on the Billboard chart, while Ruffin joined Paul Weller's Council Collective for Soul Deep four years later to raise funds for striking UK miners.
