Colleen Green - I Want To Grow Up (Album Review)

Monday, 23 February 2015 Written by Laura Johnson

Colleen Green says she wants to grow up. Well, she’s got her wish. The west coast native has honed her sound beautifully on this record, ditching bedroom riot grrl, punk and electro dabblings in favour of a cohesive, pop-leaning whole.

Green’s early offerings painted a picture of an artist who hadn’t yet found her voice. With this, her first album recorded in a studio, she’s evolved into a woman who knows exactly what she wants and how it should sound. She says it best herself: “I got a mind of my own and I know it’s a good one, so I don’t take advice from fools.”

Green is brazenly, endearingly honest, but does so without the moaning and preaching that so often accompanies such openly critical self assessment. On Things That Are Bad For Me (Part II) she proclaims: “I wanna do drugs right now. I want to get fucked up, I don’t care how.”

So, while she may not be the poster girl for abstinence, there’s certainly a platform here for those who feel isolated in their need for the occasional dose of oblivion.

But fear not, the songs are by no means all self deprecation. Whatever I Want has an It’s My Party feel to it, accompanied by dirty guitars and fleshed out by a full band including JEFF the Brotherhood's Jake Orrall and Diarrhea Planet's Casey Weissbuch.

Deeper Than Love is again touching in its candour: “I don’t want to think about it. It’s so scary. It’s the closeness, it’s the intimacy, I’m afraid it might kill me.” Green manages to merge Shangri-La harmonies with punk guitars, making for some impressively catchy, yet dark and heavy, melodies.

This is brooding pop mixed with a dash of grunge and a whole lot of punk mentality. It’s a cocktail of noise that Green has perfected over the years, resulting in an open, unflinching album that’s also the best of her career.
