The Dead Weather - Dodge And Burn (Album Review)

Thursday, 01 October 2015 Written by Laura Johnson

‘Dodge And Burn’, the Dead Weather’s third full length, oozes rock’n’roll. Alison Mosshart and Jack White are the perfect musical sparring partners and here they deftly tread the line between control and chaos. But what else did we expect?

The record’s lead single, I Feel Love (Every Million Miles), kicks things off with the first of many razor-sharp riffs, synth-fuelled bass and a layer of fuzz, with Mosshart’s vocals as unrelenting as ever.  Buzzkill(er) veers back and forth between contemporary and vintage soundscapes, amounting to a playful refresh of the band’s stated sound.

Three Dollar Hat bursts with character and erratic melodies, while Let Me Through has Mosshart inhabiting the sort of song she lit up with the Kills, which is no bad thing but can be a rarity when White is involved.

Rough Detective, though, is another beautiful example of White and Mosshart’s ability to play off one another, one of the Dead Weather’s great strengths as a band

Impossible Winner is as odd as it is brilliant. An anthemic ballad that sounds like it’s been plucked right out of the West End, it’s the sort of song we always knew Mosshart was capable of delivering but never in a million years thought we would hear. Her vocals, coupled with strings, deliver for an epic ending to a meticulous, brilliant album.
