Cult singer-songwriter Bill Callahan, formerly known as Smog, is a modern alt-country auteur. His literary and often slyly funny lyrics are backed by meticulous musical arrangements, which take root and gradually bloom like delicate desert flora.
As with much of his recent catalogue ‘YTI⅃AƎЯ’, Callahan’s 19th full-length album, sees him erring towards the optimistic and profound, where his acclaimed past work was once defined by his sardonicism and gentle misanthropy.
‘YTI⅃AƎЯ’ is primarily concerned with change and rebirth. Partition’s mantras cite meditation and microdosing in order to “touch the picture”.
These urgent lyrics are laid atop a gradually developing song structure, which parallels the sentiment of renewal and personal development.
The gorgeous Planets takes a more relaxed, spiritual approach to notions of cyclical restoration. There’s a Modest Mouse-like sense of cosmic wonder to Callahan’s lyrics that imagine him “laying on this rock” while he “hear(s) the planet's singing”. This lush imagery is followed by a wordless second half that dissipates into free form deconstruction, which blinks like stars.
These are just a few of the record’s creative, poignant highlights. Callahan is ageing like a fine whiskey, becoming richer, deeper and more satisfyingly intoxicating with every year that passes.
