Kelly Clarkson has now presided over a chart-topping solo career spanning more than two decades, parlaying her show-stopping voice into eight studio albums that have gone top three at home in the US, with six of them running all the way to Platinum certifications. And there are no signs of Clarkson coming up for air anytime soon on her superb new LP ‘Chemistry’.

Depicting the trials and tribulations of a romantic relationship sliding from the rails, ‘Chemistry’ speaks from the heart in relation to Clarkson’s difficult divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock last year.

‘Chemistry’ is a delicate and emotional record that tugs at the heart strings from the very start. High Road is an early highlight, feeding in some of the powerful, empowering rock elements that Clarkson used to make 2004’s ‘Breakaway’ an era-defining pop record.

The ensuing Me is one of the most impactful ballads Clarkson has released to date, exuding newfound confidence and self-love.

“Don’t need somebody to pick these pieces up, I put together my broken,” she belts during the song's, gospel-leaning chorus. “Let go of the pain I’ve been holding, don’t need to need somebody when I got me.”

On Favorite Kind of High, a co-write with Carly Rae Jepsen that has also been given a pop-house makeover by David Guetta, Clarkson stretches out with her extraordinary vocal range, cutting back against dancing guitar stabs during the chorus. Lighthouse, meanwhile, is a raw, honest piano ballad in which Clarkson comes to terms with the realities of her divorce, accepting that she had to “walk away in order to survive”.

‘Chemistry’ is the most personal album that Clarkson has released so far in her career, acting as a source of therapy during one of the most taxing times of her life. Her response to the situation is deeply personal, with music acting as a much-needed emotional crutch until she could transform back into the strong, resilient woman she is.
