Manchester quintet Daystar are currently riding high on the success of their first TV appearance, and are set to release their new single 'Slip and Dive' – the opening track to their self titled debut album.
'Slip and Dive' is an upbeat track bringing the somewhat dated Manchester indie from the Nineties to the here and now. It starts off with a funky bass line and then slips into a slightly Manchester vibe with the rhythm guitars. The slight soprano to Simons vocals, however, gives the band a fresh edge – something different to the normally snarled tones of Northern (especially Mancunian) bands.
The album moves through slightly different styles of indie, but always comes back to Daystar’s roots of Manchester. 'Mrs Joe' has an acoustic feel to it, with tingly lead guitars, and mellow vocals, 'Sleeper' is an indie lullaby, and 'Switchback' is a short, tingly and fresh accolade to Ninties indie pop. The album ends on 'Up Here' a song which brings the feel of summer and sunshine to a grey day.
Daystar maybe from Manchester, and may have some of the Madchester about them, but they bring a sense of modern realism. They’ve ditched the nasally snarls and the attitude from the scenes heyday, and produced a pleasing array of uplifting Indie anthems.
