Chi Cheng, bassist of Sacramento rockers Deftones, is beginning to emerge from a coma after spending the last three and a half years in an unconscious state.
Cheng, who was seriously injured after becoming involved in a car accident on November 4th 2008, can now move his leg when instructed, as well as being able to grunt and mumble like he only previously could. A website has been setup so fans, friends and well-wishers can check on his progress.
The 60mph crash which Cheng was involved in left him in a critical condition, requiring surgery to remove some of his brain in order to keep him alive. After seven months in hospital, his condition slowly began to improve and he was taken off life support. Two years down the line and Cheng has managed to start emerging from his coma, slipping in and out for short periods of time.
Now Cheng is starting to respond to commands with sounds and is even able to lift up his leg when asked by doctors. Despite the huge improvement, there’s still a long way to go before he’s back to full health – and his bandmates and family members have been trying to help him as much as they can, setting up a benefit concert and releasing a single to raise cash to fund Cheng’s recovery.
