Chvrches Announce New Album 'Screen Violence', Share Collaboration With The Cure's Robert Smith

Thursday, 03 June 2021 Written by Laura Johnson

Chvrches have announced a new album.

'Screen Violence', the follow-up to 2018's 'Love is Dead', is due for release on August 27 via EMI in the UK and Glassnote in the US. The majority of the material was recorded remotely between Los Angeles and Glasgow, and self-produced and mixed by the trio via video calls and audio sharing programs.

Discussing the album and its title — which was originally a name idea for the band, vocalist Lauren Mayberry said:

“I think for me it was helpful to go into the process with the idea that I could write something escapist almost. That felt freeing initially, to have concepts and stories to weave your own feelings and experiences through but in the end, all the lyrics were definitely still personal.”

The band's Martin Doherty added: “To me, the screen aspect was a bit more literal. When we were making the record, it was like half of our lives were lived through screens. What began as a concept was now a lifeline."

Alongside news of the record, the band have shared its second single, How Not To Drown, a collaboration with The Cure's Robert Smith. The track deals in ominous alt-rock melodies, thunderous beats and emotional vocal performances from both Mayberry and Smith. It follows previous cut He Said She Said.

The video for How Not To Drown premieres on YouTube at 6pm BST today (June 3) via the link below.

Chvrches will support 'Screen Violence' with a North American tour of the same name throughout November and December. Support will come from Donna Missal. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on June 11.
