The Stranglers Share New Track If Something's Gonna Kill Me (It Might As Well Be Love)

Friday, 06 August 2021 Written by Laura Johnson

The Stranglers have released a new track.

If Something’s Gonna Kill Me (It Might As Well Be Love) is the latest song to be lifted from their new album, 'Dark Matters', out on September 10.

It was written by JJ Burnel after the death of keyboard player Dave Greenfield in 2020 due to COVID-19, and then arranged by Baz Warne. Despite his passing, Greenfield appears on eight of the record's 11 tracks. Burnel said:

“‘If Something’s Gonna Kill Me’ was actually one of the few songs written for this album after we lost our dear friend and colleague Dave. So I started writing about that. He was one of life’s innocents, and I thought it would be good to mark that point in the lyrics - ‘innocence has left this house’.

"A song can be interpreted in so many different ways. Daniel’s [Oramas] interpretation is nothing like I envisaged. So in my book that’s great.”

The song beautifully combines together new wave and punk to make a captivating four and a half minute cut.  Head below to watch its accompanying video, produced by Debonair Films and directed by Atlanta-based filmmaker Daniel Oramas.

In early 2022, The Stranglers will hit the road for their Final Full UK Tour, which was rescheduled from autumn 2020 due to COVID-19. Original tickets are valid, with the remainder on sale now.
