Ronnie Spector has died aged 78.

The Ronettes singer, born Veronica Greenfield, passed away on Wednesday (January 12) following a brief battle with cancer. A statement from her family broke the news:

"Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.

"Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humour and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude.

"Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.

"In lieu of flowers, Ronnie requested that donations be made to your local women's shelter or to the American Indian College Fund.

"A celebration of Ronnie's life and music will be announced in the future.

"The family respectfully asks for privacy at this time."

The Ronettes formed in 1957, with Ronnie alongside her elder sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. In 1963, they auditioned for Phil Spector, to whom she was married from 1968 to 1972, though it was an abusive marriage, she revealed in her 1990 autobiography. He died in 2021 while serving a prison sentence for murdering actress Lana Clarkson.

The hugely influential girl group released hits like Be My Baby, Walking In The Rain, and Baby I Love You before breaking up in early 1967. Ronnie Spector went on to forge a successful solo career and released five studio albums.
