Ezra Furman has long been capable of encapsulating deep feeling and emotional weight for an audience. On her latest album ‘All of Us Flames’ she takes her search for community and makes it tangible for listeners.

Opening with a series of descriptive, poetic lyrics in Train Comes Through, Furman’s songwriting is as compelling as it is alluring. She weaves through life’s ups and downs, as though riding the high of that runaway train.

Her vocals are as distinctive as ever, yet there is an enigmatic quality to them this time around that only reverberates deeper as the album progresses.

Two personal areas of her life come together—being Jewish and a transgender woman—as the narrative sway of ‘All of us Flames’ becomes a riveting form of self-expression.

Hurtling forwards on the pulse of headstrong alt-rock, so much of her identity spills across the lyrics and yet we still yearn to hear more. On Lilac and Black, Furman chimes: “Tonight I’m dreaming of my queer girl gang, we who walk this deadly path, and the city that tries to kill us each night will soon bow before our wrath.”

Standing in solidarity with the trans community, the message is so clear that Furman’s almost dystopian world smudges the borders into a very believable reality. Even a woozy ode to The Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy contains heartbreaking truths: “I watch her flicker on my TV, the teenage girl I never got to be.”

As her lyrics encase inner turmoil and unspoken thoughts, Furman’s music is haunting and rousing. She is a voice of a new queer generation, and a voice for anyone who is willing to listen.
