Mercury Music Prize 2006 Nominations Announced

ImageThe nominations for this years Mercury Music Prize have been announced.

The obvious candidate for the critics British album of the year is 2006's breakthrough indie act the Arctic Monkeys, for the debut release 'Whatever People Say I Am...'

Other contendees for the prestigious award, which historically as acted as a springboard for more notable mainstream successes, are The Editors for 'Back Room', Guillemots 'Through The Windowpane', Muse' 'Black Holes & Other Revelations' and Thom Yorke's 'The Eraser'.

Last year's surprise winner was Antony and the Johnsons. Past winners include PJ Harvey, Pulp, Franz Ferdinand and Primal Scream.

Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
Hot Chip - The Warning
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Muse - Black Holes And Revelations
Lou Rhodes - Beloved One
Scritti Politti - White Bread, Black Beer
Sway - This Is My Demo
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas
Zoe Rahman - Melting Pot

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at a plush London hotel on September 5th, and will also be presented with a cheque for £20,000.
