Doncaster Rovers Boss Bemoans Westlife Gig

You rarely see a gig on a football pitch so close to the season starting, so it’s no surprise that Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll is upset after Westlife were allowed to perform on his side’s pitch last Sunday.

Around 15,000 fans stomped onto Keepmoat Stadium’s pitch to watch the Irish pop group belt out ‘Flying Without Wings’ and a whole load of their hits last weekend, potentially damaging their turf ahead of the season start tomorrow – forcing the club to play their first game away.

The club had requested that the football league schedule their first game at home, but they had to remove their request after the council worked with the stadium bosses to allow Westlife to play. O’Driscoll described the stadium managers as ‘vindictive’.

“I would've loved a home fixture,” said O’Driscoll. “Because we've never had one in the time we've been in the Championship. We had to give way to Westlife unfortunately.

“I understand the financial implications of trying to run a stadium, but nobody has a concert five days before a championship season. It smacks of being vindictive. We will be the only football league team not to have even played on our pitch before the start of the season - that can't be right.”
