Gong Founder Daevid Allen Dies Aged 77

Friday, 13 March 2015 Written by Huw Baines

Daevid Allen, founder of prog legends Gong, has died aged 77.

It was confirmed last month that the Australian musician had declined further treatment for cancer, which had spread to his neck and lung. He wrote:

“I am not interested in endless surgical operations and in fact it has come as a relief to know that the end is in sight. I am a great believer in “The Will of the Way Things Are” and I also believe that the time has come to stop resisting and denying and to surrender to the way it is. I can only hope that during this journey, I have somehow contributed to the happiness in the lives of a few other fellow humans.”

Along with his work as part of Gong, Allen also helped to found Soft Machine, an influential Canterbury Scene band, in the mid-60s.
