The Icarus Line's Joe Cardamone Shares Solo Single New Cross

Thursday, 09 November 2017 Written by Laura Johnson

Joe Cardamone has shared his new solo single, New Cross.

Discussing how his new material is a departure from the sound of his former band, the Icarus Line frontman said:

"I had a month of [being] pretty freaked out. And then I started jamming with people, and no matter who I put in the room it’s still sounding like the fucking Icarus Line. And I realised ‘I did that, it’s done, there’s no reason to do this again’. Perhaps I should have been doing something different ten years ago. But for this whole time, the preceding years, I was low key making hip hop beats at home.

I don’t care about bands anymore. It just feels fucking retro. It just feels like an antiquated configuration and I understand that people enjoy seeing it, but to me, I’ve never been interested in doing any of this shit unless I feel like I’m fucking peeling the thing forward a little bit, even if I’m not but I need to feel like I am. That’s good enough for me. You’re either part of the problem or you’re not, that’s all there is to it. I’m a very hard line individual. That’s why I broke my band up.....The world deserves more right now and needs it. Somehow I was invited to see Imagine Dragons play. So we went. I got a panic attack when I saw them, because I was shocked ‘is this what people like’?

David Bowie died... The next day I went to the studio and I started thumbing through some beats I had made and thought ‘I’m going to sing on one of these things and just see what the fuck happens’. And then I listened to it back really loud and I thought ‘maybe I can do this’. As soon as my brain shifts into ‘this is how it goes’, boom, I’m all animal. All the pieces just fall.

I have 40 songs. The Holy War films I made was just as integral a portion to the entry of what I’m doing as any of the songs. That’s the main plan, to focus on doing films just as much as the music because it of explains the universe of what I’m trying to communicate better than any of the songs do in a certain aspect. All I know is every time I make film people are drawn further into the music. If I don’t make the film then there’s no gateway drug.

I’ve already been writing the next [film clip] and it’s got naked babies walking down the middle of the street. It let me know I could do it. That’s really what it was about, realising ‘oh I can do this fucking shit’ and then that’s kind of what the first European tour was about... ‘Can I do a show?"

Catch Cardamone supporting Mark Lanegan on his upcoming European tour, which will head to the UK and Ireland between November 27 and December 12.
