Adele - 21 (Album Review)

There isn’t much to say about Adele that hasn’t already been said. If you’re reading this now in Spring 2011 then you won’t be able to leave your house without hearing Adele at some point during your day. If you’re reading this in, say, Spring 2021 then Adele will probably be the Prime Minister and she’ll be singing your budget to you in order to try and make it sound that little bit less depressing. She is certainly popular enough.

This is the woman who along with artists such as Duffy and Estelle, were seen as the future of music, just three years ago. Back then, all three artists had similar levels of success. Since then, it couldn’t be more different.

ImageDuffy has tried to get back into our hearts and charts but found that music had changed slightly in the past three years and her second album, for want of a better word, bombed. And as far as Estelle goes, if you remember her, then give yourself a pat on the back.

But things went differently for Adele. Ever since Rebecca Ferguson sang one of Bob Dylan’s songs on The X Factor last year, things have been very different indeed. Adele’s version of said Bob Dylan song went flying back into the chart and then a few weeks later, lead single 'Rolling in the Deep' was released.

This was quickly followed by the album '21', which at the time of writing has broken pretty much every record going and has been Number One for countless weeks, as well as being Number One in the single charts for similar amount of times. Oh, and as well as that, that album from three years ago has sneaked back to Number 2 in the album charts too.

I may have been being harsh on Duffy, maybe she was just unlucky. Adele, on the other hand, is undoubtedly quite lucky. Luckily for her, '21' is a truly stunning piece of work.

An album that has no bad songs is very rare. An album that has at least seven or eight possible singles on it is even rarer. Make no bones about it; this album deserves all the records and success that it has received.

Tales of heartbreak and pain make this so easy to relate to. Some of the lyrics are truly beautiful. 'Someone Like You' has been played everywhere yet still seems to sound fresh every time you hear it. Songs like 'Don’t You Remember' and 'Set Fire to the Rain' have truly stunning vocals.

The album is about a tough break up. It’s ridiculously selfish to say this but you feel glad that it happened, purely because as a result, you end up with one of the finest pop/soul albums of recent years.

I didn’t think they made albums like this anymore, especially not successful commercial ones. I’m more than glad that they do.
