In a recent interview with American radio station WGRD the Black Keys drummer, Patrick Carney (pictured left), held nothing back while talking about music streaming service Spotify. He commented particularly on Sean Parker, a Spotify board member, and how the band's royalties don't seem to quite make sense.
It all started at SXSW when Parker, who originally started Napster and is now a board member for Spotify, claimed that Spotify will generate more revenue for the music industry over the next two years than iTunes.
When asked if he agreed with this, Carney responded by labelling Parker an asshole and a royalty thief. Carney continued: “It's all kind of confusing - on a 99-cent download, the royalty that goes to the band is about 12 cents. 66 plays will get a 12-cent royalty. But then that goes to the label, and part of that is paid out to the artist from that. You can't make money on that - trust me - Dan and I like to make money. If it was fair to the artist we would be involved in it, but it's not."
