Following on from his incredible f-word-happy meltdown onstage at yesterday’s iHeartMusic Festival, it’s been revealed that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will be entering rehab for substance abuse.
The news was broken via a statement on the band’s website, which read: “Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”

It comes after the punk-rock star had a ‘21st Century Breakdown’ live onstage, where he became enraged at their 45 minute set at the festival being cut short by 20 minutes to make way for American singer-songwriter Usher - something that pissed him off so much so that he went on an epic onstage rant, cutting short the band’s 1994 hit ‘Basket Case’.
Shouting at the audience at the Las Vegas-based event, Armstrong said: “Fuck this shit. I'm gonna play a fucking new song. Fuck this shit. Give me a fucking break. One minute left. One minute fucking left. You're gonna give me one fucking minute? Look at that fucking sign right there... one minute.”
He continued on for a good while longer, adding that he’d been ‘been around since fucking 198-fucking-8’, and that he wasn’t ‘fucking Justin Bieber’. He then proceeded to smash his guitar with bassist Mike Dirnt.
But, the news that the singer and guitarist will be entering rehab still comes as some surprise, as E! News had reported that he was laughing and joking with fans backstage afterwards - saying “Billy was backstage laughing and the fans loved it. A very rock 'n' roll moment.”
It’s unknown what substance Armstrong needs treatment for, and what or how many shows may be affected the incident - though he should at least by fine their date in the Emirates Stadium on June 1st next year.
