Trivium - In the Court of the Dragon (Album Review)

Friday, 15 October 2021 Written by Rebecca Llewellyn

Established in the late 1990s, and now boasting 10 studio albums under their belt, Trivium deserve to be classed as metal heavyweights. The Florida band have long taken great pleasure in mixing a brooding array of heavy styles and subgenres, but ‘In the Court of the Dragon’ is perhaps their most bullish and most profound work to date.

With the expected face-melting guitar solos and unrelenting barked vocals, paired with killer hooks, from frontman Matt Heafy, this is fierce, bold, and adventurous music, stacking up as a towering modern metal record.

Opening with instrumental track X, a melodic medieval fantasy piece that very nearly succeeds in lulling us into a false sense of security, the title track then tears through the silence, with a rip-roaring performance by Heafy.

Loud and unapologetic, the song jump-starts the record, setting a punishing pace for what is to follow.

Although certain melodies and riffs incite a feeling of déjà vu, some of them have long adorned the walls of the thrash metal hall of fame, it is Trivium’s passionate, no-holds-barred delivery that catapults ‘In the Court of the Dragon’ towards greatness.

Heafy never falters. From the crowd-pleasing choruses on Like a Sword Over Damocles and No Way Back Just Through to tracks that rewrite their own rules, raise heart rates, and demand attention, the prime example being From Dawn to Decadence, Trivium are in commanding form.
