Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes - Sticky (Album Review)

Does Frank Carter ever tire? It’s a mystery. Famed for frantic live shows, fuelled by piercing punk anthems, he can often be found crawling across a stage, or swinging from the light fixtures.

But, having toured relentlessly with various groups for the best part of 20 years, how does an unstoppable force react to something like lockdown. The answer? ‘Sticky’, a full-throttled juggernaut that rewrites the concept of anarchy in the UK.

From the get-go, ‘Sticky’ launches itself forward with tracks that are contagiously catchy. Appropriately, not wanting to brand these latest efforts solely as a “lockdown record”, Carter made this with freedom at the forefront of his mind.

Extracting the vein of seriousness that flowed through 2019’s ‘End of Suffering’, ‘Sticky’ is faster-paced, far more free-spirited, and certainly thirsty for a crowd.

Boasting a larger-than-life collaboration with Idles’ Joe Talbot on My Town, and with rising star Lynks featured on Bang Bang and Go Get a Tattoo, Carter has trusted his instincts here and struck gold. His gritty vocals tear at the album’s flesh, but there is a winning radio-friendly edge that might set ‘Sticky’ alongside Idles’ ‘Ultra Mono’ as a rock interloper into that world.

Peppering alt-rock with punchy alternative dance, while maintaining a firm grip on their punk origins, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes provide chant-worthy choruses and addictive verses, striking the perfect balance between accessibility and their tendency towards unhinged madness. ‘Sticky’ promises to continue, if not amplify, his already notorious reputation.
