Bloc Party - Anatomy Of A Brief Romance (Album Review)

Bloc Party once soundtracked the messy naivety of youth, with sex, anxiety, hedonism and heartbreak channelled through twitching guitars, pounding drums and choruses built to detonate on festival stages and sweaty indie club dancefloors alike. Two decades later, on their seventh album ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’, Kele Okereke is more emotionally articulate than ever. The irony is that as he has become less guarded, Bloc Party have become more musically restrained.
Opener 22.01.22 makes that immediately clear. Reverberating synths loop softly while Okereke whispers like the narrator of an audiobook, melodic flourishes threatening to blossom around him without ever quite getting there. Gone are the days when a Bloc Party album opener felt like a punch in the face — this is the sound of someone giving you a warm hug while wearing a frown.
Follow-up Coming On Strong is another song that’s almost there, all liquid synths, thumping drums and swaggering riffs that strut across the dancefloor searching for a lover.
There’s no stadium-sized chorus to deliver the payoff, but there’s that trademark sexual tension so much of ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’ misses.
For an album that retraces the real-life rise and fall of a relationship, ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’ sounds way too clinical. Often, the music behaves more politely than its emotional core demands. Worst Birthday Ever pairs accusatory lyrics with a delivery so subdued it borders on parody, while Lagoon Blue’s rumbling drums feel like CPR to a song threatening to flatline.
Eulogy closes things in similar fashion: it tries to fizz like champagne but sounds more like being sat at home with a bottle of red on a Saturday night. That contrast sums up ‘Anatomy Of A Brief Romance’ — Okereke has never sounded more willing to expose the messiness of love, yet Bloc Party too often dress those feelings in arrangements scrubbed of the sweat and spontaneity that intimacy demands.
