William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet film will be screened at venues across the UK as part of a 2027 global tour celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The show will see Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 blockbuster starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes played on a cinema-sized screen with the original dialogue and action, accompanied by a live band performing the soundtrack, combining rock and orchestral musicians, vocals, electronics and a DJ.
Following its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House in Australia on September 29 next year, the show will head to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, York, Birmingham and Manchester between October 17 and 23. Academy Award-nominee Luhrmann said:
"One of the greatest surprises over the past three decades has been watching Romeo + Juliet find new audiences again and again. That's the enduring magic of Shakespeare and cinema. This concert celebrates both, while inviting audiences around the world to experience the film's emotion, music, and theatricality in a completely new way."
Producer and Managing Director at GEA Live, Floris Douwes added: "Romeo + Juliet has influenced generations of filmmakers, musicians, and audiences, and its impact continues to be felt 30 years later. Our goal was to create a live experience that honors that legacy while giving audiences a fresh reason to fall in love with the film all over again."
The tour is set to visit three continents altogether, with more dates to be announced in due course. In the meantime, tickets for the new UK shows go on general sale at 10am this Friday (September 18).
