The Pretty Reckless - Dear God (Album Review)

Five years after ‘Death By Rock And Roll’, Taylor Momsen returns not to mourn the past, but to commemorate surviving it. ‘Dear God’ trades grief for a sense of perseverance, charting addiction, depression and loss through songs that constantly search for something bigger to believe in. The result is the strongest album The Pretty Reckless have made to date.

Throughout their career, the band have been criticised for wearing influences, from Soundgarden to Led Zeppelin, too proudly. Here, those comparisons finally become irrelevant, with tighter songwriting besting the idea of chasing some sort of nebulous originality for the sake of it.

For I Am Death is the obvious high point. Ben Phillips tears through one of the filthiest riffs of his career as Momsen brilliantly personifies death itself, imagining the Grim Reaper as someone quietly exhausted by the job.

Equal parts black comedy and arena-rock anthem, it's arguably the catchiest song The Pretty Reckless have released. Elsewhere, Love Me channels Chris Cornell’s gift for balancing fragility with power, while Dragonfire burns with psychedelic swagger as Momsen wrestles addiction.

About You arrives with the sort of euphoric chorus destined for festival fields, before Eye Of The Storm delivers the album’s emotional payoff, Alanis Morissette-esque in scale but devastatingly personal as Momsen celebrates simply still being here.

Not everything lands — the Life Evermore interludes feel underdeveloped, while the title track slightly outstays its welcome despite its towering chorus — but these are small blemishes on a record overflowing with conviction. ‘Dear God’ doesn't reinvent The Pretty Reckless. Instead, it perfects the recipe for bluesy, grunge-soaked hard rock they’ve been chasing for the past 15 years. Beneath the towering riffs lies an album about choosing life, and that’s what makes it their most powerful statement yet.
