Six years is a long time between albums, but since the release of 2020’s excellent ‘Punisher’, Phoebe Bridgers hasn’t exactly kept a low profile, having scooped up a trio of Grammys as a member of Boygenius while delivering buzzy collaborations with artists such as SZA, Taylor Swift and the Killers.
Expectations for ‘Lost Weekend’ are understandably high, then. And, to Bridgers’ credit, she doesn’t seem interested in meeting them. Unfortunately, her desire to make something entirely on her own terms results in a record that feels more than a little lost in itself.
Intro track The Outsider is an odd start, with Bridgers’ layered voice fed through a vocoder to create a robotic effect at odds with her typically more organic sound. The ensuing Lost Boys, though, is great, boasting a terrific chorus hook and swelling strings.
One of the biggest talking points is Bobby, which features Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick, appearing here in his melodically experimental Jesu guise, alongside Bridgers’ partner Bo Burnham and members of American Football. Its textural swirl is a major early highlight, matched later on by Liberty Tree’s breathy stomp.
But, despite Bridgers’ clear ability to write emotionally fraught, deeply contemplative lyrics, ‘Lost Weekend’ sags under its own weight. The streaming release has a whopping 16 tracks, and the physical version has a hidden 17th song, too. The shortest version of the record is almost an hour long, and some of the ideas are stretched thin.
For all its lamentations on losing and finding love, or wrestling with the fame thrust upon her, Bridgers’ emotional punches don’t always land. ‘Lost Weekend’ feels like it was written from a better headspace (no bad thing) but its sadness comes off as cosplay. The ambition and scope is here — strings, vocoders, a huge cast of collaborators — but the songs needed a bit more time wandering to truly find themselves.
