Metric - Romanticize the Dive (Album Review)

Metric’s 10th album is, in some ways, a reckoning with the idea of a lengthy career as well as a way of looking forwards. With two albums reflecting on societal upheaval caused by a pandemic behind them, ‘Romanticize the Dive’ is no less reflective but it turns its gaze inwards.

Though it looks back on these twists and turns through the prism of creative freedom — a rare commodity in more mainstream circles, Metric have been free from label control since 2009 — the most important thing about ‘Romanticize the Dive’ is that Metric don’t live in the past. “I don’t say what they want me to say / I started something on my own,” vocalist Emily Haines sings on Wild Rut.

Instead, they find themselves whipping up new creations with the indie-synth-punk ingredients they’ve refined over two and a half decades.

Synths roll and swell during its opening tracks, while Time Is A Bomb dials up the fuzzy guitars and indie-sleaze as an ode to the march of time and long term love, vocalist Emily Haines intoning “you’re my happily ever after”. Crush Forever gently pulses with dance rhythms, while Tremolo is a glossy post-punk affair.

Elsewhere, there’s soft, heartfelt electro on As If You Were Here, Antigravity is a floor-filling dance-punk number led by piano, while closer Leave You On A High does exactly that, its synth-driven indie neatly encapsulating both an excellent album and the restless creativity that’s been key to Metric’s longevity over the past three decades.
