Karol G - No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto (Album Review)

Romantic turmoil is often a rich seam for singer-songwriters to mine. Unfortunately for Karol G personally, the apparent end of her relationship with fellow Colombian star Feid has provided plenty of material. Fortunately for her fans, ‘No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto’ demonstrates just how musically versatile heartbreak can be.
Rather than simply wallowing, Karol works through the various stages of romantic collapse across reggaeton, EDM, alternative pop and cumbia. It’s a considerably more intimate record than the colourful, globe-trotting ‘Tropicoqueta’, but not necessarily a quieter one. Anger, depression, lust and acceptance are allowed their own musical identities, making an otherwise familiar breakup narrative surprisingly unpredictable.
Final Feliz is perhaps the record’s most affecting moment. Produced by Oklou, its strange, deconstructed electronics provide a suitably unstable backdrop to Karol mourning not simply a relationship but the imagined future that disappeared with it. It’s understated and genuinely sad without becoming melodramatic.
Elsewhere, Alguien Que Te Amaba sounds like a conscious homage to Selena, embracing sparkling Tejano and cumbia while allowing Karol’s increasingly impressive vocals to do much of the heavy lifting. That it was co-written with Selena collaborator Pete Astudillo only strengthens the connection.
Less successful is Still, her much-publicised collaboration with Bruno Mars. The first fully English-language Karol G song should feel momentous, but instead its glossy ‘80s balladry is strangely bland — two enormous personalities somehow producing something considerably less interesting than either of them might individually. Peak Bruno Mars was the best part of a decade ago now, and this track reminds you of that.
That inconsistency prevents ‘No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto’ from becoming a great breakup album. But its willingness to let heartbreak be furious, sexy, melancholy and occasionally euphoric makes it a very listenable one.
