Vince Staples - Cry Baby (Album Review)

Given that Vince Staples has spent much of the past decade refining a detached strain of West Coast hip-hop, his decision to put out a rock record makes more sense than it first appears. ‘Cry Baby’ is his most urgent and politically charged album to date, the Long Beach rapper feeding off volume and a fresh tonal palette while keeping his storytelling chops at the heart of things.

‘Cry Baby’ examines the systems surrounding Staples’ lived experience, with racism, policing, capitalism folded into the uneasy reality that modern America is an increasingly difficult place to navigate with anything approaching dignity.

The riffs never quite dominate the mix, but they provide a sense of momentum that pushes Staples into unfamiliar territory. Lead single Blackberry Marmalade sets the tone well, both exciting and unsettling as its guitars bite, but Go! Go! Gorilla is even better.

Staples rattles through generations of American history before landing on a chilling childhood encounter with police violence, balancing political analysis with personal testimony without sounding didactic.

Elsewhere, Do You Know The Devil fully commits to the rock experiment. Dense, psychedelic guitars swirl around Staples’ typically deadpan delivery, creating a tension that feels genuinely fresh within his catalogue. In fact, moments like this hint at one of the album’s few frustrations: the rock sound could be stranger, more irreverent.

Staples thrives when pushing against convention, and there are occasions where you wish the guitars were louder, weirder and more willing to embrace chaos. Still, that hardly undermines what is ultimately a successful reinvention. The live instrumentation gives Staples a new energy without sacrificing the intelligence and social commentary that have long defined his work. The result may not surpass classics like ‘Big Fish Theory’ or ‘Ramona Park Broke My Heart’, but it demonstrates there are plenty of areas to explore. For a seventh album, that’s an impressive achievement in itself.
