Outlining the rise and fall of a relationship with remarkable detail, capturing the rush and excitement of falling in love before gradually sinking into heartbreak, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love’ is Olivia Rodrigo's most accomplished album yet. Beautifully sequenced, with each track allowed to build naturally on the sentiments of the last, it is an emotional journey that feels raw, real and relatable.
Drop Dead is a notable standout and immediately one of the best in Rodrigo’s collection. It’s tender, dreamy and overflowing with excitement, perfectly reflecting the headrush of fresh infatuation. Rodrigo’s lyrics are spontaneous and unfiltered, as though she’s sharing thoughts the moment they enter her head.
Stupid Song is equally impressive. Some of the album’s most dramatic, memorable melodic writing appears here, while the brilliantly dramatic bridge elevates the track even further.
My Way is utterly delicious, enticing and satisfying from start to finish as it pairs rockier influences with lyrics that explore jealousy and insecurity in a way that’s pointed and recognisable. In a similar fashion, The Cure is particularly affecting, examining mental health struggles and the difficult reality that love isn’t always enough to heal someone’s pain.
The final track proper Cigarette Smoke serves as a fitting conclusion, aiming to conjure a sense of emotional devastation and prodding listeners to relive every single heartbreak they’ve ever experienced. With its striking storytelling, strong songwriting and carefully-crafted narrative, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love’ is a defining moment in Rodrigo’s career.
