It’s been a busy season for Little Mix, even with the girlband on hiatus. Following the breakout success of Jade’s ‘That’s Showbiz Baby’ last year, Leigh-Anne is the latest member to release a highly anticipated debut album that doesn’t simply meet expectations — it exceeds them.
Serving heavy drops alongside elements of R&B and reggae, ‘My Ego Told Me To’ demonstrates the singer’s versatility at every turn. The opener Look Into My Eyes starts with a distant, AutoTuned voice, but out of nowhere its beat explodes into life. Crucially, Leigh-Anne matches that energy when her vocals arrive, sounding fired up and, frankly, incredible.
The lyrics are deeply enticing, too, centering around power and domination: “Look into my eyes / Tell me who you know / Tell me what you see, do you see a goddess?”
Dead and Gone picks up a reggae thread from the outro and offers a complete contrast to the punchiness of its predecessor, while Goodbye Goodmorning ups the vocal ante again as she belts out lyrics packed with lust and desire.
The strongest track here, though, is FREE. It’s the most straightforwardly pop moment on ‘My Ego Told Me To’, but it keeps alive the signature reggae vibe through its guitars and beats. The lyrics are uncut girl-boss: “Baby, I could lose a mil and I’d make it right back / It’s like that, baby, it’s like that / And what’s the point of living if you don’t fight back.” That energy categorises the record as whole — as debuts go, this is seriously impressive.
