The most exciting heavy bands eventually stop worrying about genre altogether. That may be the point Loathe have reached on ‘A Stranger to You’, a record that treats metalcore less as a destination than a launchpad, ricocheting between shoegaze, industrial noise, dream-pop and, at times, something approaching prog-hardcore in the vein of The Mars Volta. That it largely hangs together is remarkable.
The Liverpool quartet have always embraced contradiction, but here the stylistic and emotional swings are more extreme, like a 4DX screening of The Odyssey’s cyclops scene. Crushing riffs dissolve into ambient electronics before jolting you into jazz chords that appear from nowhere, and huge pop hooks emerge from walls of distortion. Somehow, the songwriting is strong enough to keep it on the rails.
Revenant is perhaps the album’s defining moment, occupying the perfect middle ground between Loathe’s melodic and uncompromising sides.
It’s punishing without becoming monochrome, proving the band don’t need to sacrifice hooks to achieve genuine heaviness.
Elsewhere, Block of Flats veers between fragile atmospherics and post-hardcore catharsis with remarkable confidence, while Harder to Pretend briefly abandons metal altogether for something closer to progressive art-rock before crashing back into digital chaos. The Ladder provides the album’s biggest surprise — an elegant love song that demonstrates the breadth of Loathe's emotional range — it’s not quite More Than Words by Extreme, but it’s in the same spirit.
If there’s a criticism, it's that ambition occasionally outruns execution. The production can become so dense that individual ideas compete for space, while the constant stylistic pivots sometimes feel like a band reluctant to let a great moment breathe before chasing the next one. Even so, comparatively few contemporary heavy records manage to sound this adventurous.
Better still, many of these songs possess the kind of cinematic dynamics and emotional payoffs that music supervisors actively search for. For a modern touring band of their size, those sync opportunities could prove almost as valuable as the breakdowns themselves — and may ultimately be what keeps Loathe on the road long enough to make something even greater.
