Ravyn Lenae - Blue Island (Album Review)

Versatility is generally regarded as an unqualified virtue in pop music, but Ravyn Lenae’s third album suggests there might be limits. ‘Blue Island’ ricochets between R&B, indie-rock, synth-pop, psychedelia and experimental electronics with impressive confidence. And yet, the more it demonstrates Lenae can do, the harder it becomes to work out exactly what the album wants to be.

Perhaps that’s deliberate. Following the enormous success of her 2024 single Love Me Not, Lenae has spoken about resisting attempts to define both her music and identity. ‘Blue Island’ responds by refusing to sit still, drawing from a wide range of influences including Janet Jacksonantigold, The Cranberries and Suicide’s Martin Rev. The results are impeccably produced and frequently inventive, but there’s surprisingly little through line connecting them.

Sew Me Back Together demonstrates the approach at its most charming. Lenae’s breathy soprano skips between registers over light, airy production, with layered harmonies giving the whole thing an almost weightless quality. It’s sophisticated songwriting masquerading as something effortless.

Reputation, a collaboration with Dominic Fike, operates at the opposite end of the spectrum, pushing Lenae towards a more assertive, contemporary pop sound. It’s another demonstration of her adaptability, although by this point that starts becoming the problem: every new direction seems to reset the album rather than deepen it.

Potential is more interesting, beginning as a delicate ballad before suddenly collapsing into distorted guitars and skittering electronics. It’s a genuinely exciting transformation and suggests how strange ‘Blue Island’ might have been had Lenae pushed these contrasts further.

Instead, it is an odd listen that doesn’t make the most of that feeling. There are hooks everywhere, immaculate vocals and an almost absurd breadth of influences, but the cumulative effect is weirdly bland. Lenae has successfully demonstrated that she cannot be boxed into R&B, pop or indie-rock. The next challenge might be making all those different versions of herself sound like they’re inhabiting the same record.
