Pints, Pills and Poor Choices: The Streets' 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' Is As Real As Ever

If you were broke in 2004 but could somehow scrape together enough loose change for a messy night out and a kebab, among other questionable life choices, the story Mike Skinner told of losing £1000 on ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ probably felt less like a concept album and more like a snapshot of your early twenties. Fast forward more than two decades and The Streets are bringing the hedonism, heartbreak and hope contained in their seminal rap opera to Cardiff Castle as part of a nationwide tour, and suddenly the glorious clusterfuck of being young doesn’t feel quite so far away anymore.

Full album shows are often a straightforward nostalgia trip, but tonight is mostly an immersive semi-theatrical stage show where Skinner stays in character as the hapless protagonist, letting the songs speak for themselves. Appearing against a life-size replica of the bus shelter from the album cover, he sets up the narrative, telling us “it was supposed to be so easy…” before the story begins to unravel, from a botched run to the DVD shop that leads to the stack of cash going missing.

Backed by a superb live band, Skinner, pint in hand, takes us through first dates on the romantic ballad Could Well Be In, gambling struggles on Not Addicted and the feeling of a night gone wrong with the tense, unsettling pulse of Blinded By The Lights. The on stage re-enactment also features the brilliant Roo Savill stepping into the role of Girlfriend ‘Simone’ on the album, as well as long-time Streets collaborator Kevin Mark Trail, who both slip effortlessly in and out of the story, providing vocals for characters that feel like people you actually know.

The night’s first singalong naturally belongs to Fit But You Know It, but it’s when Skinner steps away from the lad culture and into the emotional weight of quieter moments —  the sweet domestic bliss of Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way, the confrontational Get Out Of My House, which turns a row into something that feels far too familiar, and the beautiful yet quietly heartbreaking Dry Your Eyes Mate —  that truly stir the soul. Empty Cans, the album’s cathartic finale arrives with Skinner (spoiler alert!) finding the missing grand down the back of a television to a huge cheer from the crowd, letting go of past mistakes, and underlining how growing up is about more than age.

The second half of the night is a reminder of just how much the Birmingham act meant to twenty-something Britain, with a little more between-song banter thrown in. There’s a big chunk of 2002’s ‘Original Pirate Material’, another of the UK’s finest modern albums, where Skinner’s gritty, everyday observations still feel as real as ever. The lairiness wraps up with what has become a tradition of sorts, as Skinner throws himself into the audience, crowd surfing through flying limbs and drinks for a chaotic rendition of Take Me As I Am.

More than 20 years on, the pubs have turned cashless, the DVD is now available to stream online, and you’d have to be blind to lose anything behind a flatscreen TV, but Skinner’s stories about pints, pills and poor choices still speak to the present, with the songs feeling every bit as relatable as the day they were released.
