Armed with riffs that summon the fury of ancient dragons, Biffy Clyro breached the walls of Cardiff Castle in a rock ‘n’ roll assault of epic proportions.
Clattering into opener The Captain, they quickly remind the audience why they’re regarded as one of the best live bands of their generation. Whether through the haunting, cathartic anthem Living is a Problem Because Everything Dies or the heart-wrenching epic Black Chandelier, the band explore the full spectrum of emotions, delivering the sort of drama a seasoned Biffy fan would expect.
Frontman Simon Neil screams into the mic and batters his guitar as if it is the last time he’ll ever have the pleasure, reflecting the passion the band bleeds night after night. That fervour only serves to enrich their majestic lyrics — a Biffy Clyro album is great, but witnessing the band live is a profound, existential experience.
The setlist stretches across their entire discography, feeling like a celebration of the history of the band. Laced between the expected radio anthems are some welcome surprises such as There’s No Such Man as Crasp and There’s No Such Thing as a Jaggy Snake. Considering anything pre-‘Puzzle’ hardly gets a look in these days, seeing the classic ‘Infinity Land’ tracks get a run out brings unbridled delight to the OG Biffy heads.
Regrettably, though, the band don’t hand out doctor’s notes to cover anyone losing their voices belting out the stacked encore of Machines, Wolves of Winter, Bubbles and Many of Horror, a fitting finale to a beautiful night in the Welsh capital. We doubt it’s the last time Biffy Clyro will journey across the Severn Bridge, and it’s safe to say Cardiff will open its doors in a heartbeat when they do. Until then, revel in the memories of a monumental night with a band at the top of their game. They came, they saw, they conquered.
