This Is Lorelei - The Singer In My Band (Album Review)

The common thread running through Nate Amos’s music, as part of his long-running solo project This Is Lorelei and art-pop duo Water From Your Eyes, is not taking things too seriously. The word ‘playful’ is a bit of highfalutin critic trope, but his music kind of epitomises the term in a creative context.
Within the confines of This Is Lorelei, this playfulness manifests in the form of some truly direct indie-pop songwriting. Within post-ironic art, sincerity and clarity are wielded in a surprising and, yes, playful manner. You’re constantly waiting for a subversion that never arrives, because the straightforward nature of things is itself the subversion.
On his third ‘proper’ album under this banner (he’s self-released hundreds of tracks), Amos comes up with 11 stellar slices of bright, upbeat indie, tilting from power-pop to alt-country.
The good vibes are relentless, whether they’re captured in the jaunty acoustics of Watching Heaven Fall or the linear jangle-pop of The Kid With The Crown.
Amos achieves emotional impact by bulldozing through cliches, finding new meaning in the process. In a similar fashion to peers such as Alex G, Titles Sailing (Your Baby’s Down) and Don’t You Cry In Lonesomeness jumble up classic pop phrases, while the title track’s lyrics repurpose familiar Americana tropes to evocative effect.
Both a buoyant indie-pop album blessed with palpable feeling and a fascinating example of contemporary post-irony, ‘The Singer In My Band’ is a sweet, giddy delight that dares you to stare into its eyes and see if it winks or not.
