PVA - No More Like This (Album Review)

Recently, a crop of bands have splintered off from the dominant UK post-punk sound of the past decade and pursued a darker, more electronic approach. Chalk, Scaler, Mandy, Indiana and overseas groups such as Model/Actriz are crafting punishing, danceable music that feels thrillingly new and alive.

Now, buzzy Londoners PVA have taken this dark, dank route too. Where their 2022 debut situated them in a nu-rave and electroclash lineage, across 10 meticulous tracks ‘No More Like This’ sees them take a turn towards moody, mercurial electronica.

Investigating a blend of techno, trip-hop and The XX-style downtempo indie-tronica, PVA come up with some inventive, engrossing tracks here, notably in the album’s first half. Mate, for example, is sinister and borderline industrial in its mood, while Send is a hard techno banger.

The only track that finds ‘No More Like This’ move from a contemporary approach into revivalism is Boyface. A decidedly ‘90s baggy/trip-hop beat guides this loose, spacious track. It’s striking and memorable, but far more familiar in its swaggering style than the best tracks elsewhere on the record.

Perhaps because Boyface is so memorable, some have categorised ‘No More Like This’ as a retro album. This is unfair, because most of it is impressively unique club-tronica that deserves to be embraced, especially in a live setting, where these songs will surely sound electrifying.
