A growing, but increasingly prolific, corner of alternative music in the 2020s has been reserved for a crop of bands often reductively described as playing ‘post-punk’, but who are in fact making intense, electrifying live electronic music. See Belfast’s Chalk, New Yorkers Model/Actriz and London act PVA, among many others.
Manchester’s Mandy, Indiana are another major band in this growing canon. Their profile has grown rapidly. The band’s 2023 debut ‘I’ve Seen A Way’ received widespread acclaim and they even appeared at Coachella in 2024; an impressive feat for a bunch of experimentalists whose debut was recorded in caves and crypts.
Their follow-up ‘Urgh’, which saw the four-piece swap subterranean recording for writing sessions in an “eerie studio house”, is no less strange and abrasive. Its 10 tracks are bold, unpredictable and texturally intriguing examples of modern industrial rock.
And that’s industrial in the literal sense — moments such as A Brighter Tomorrow are as cold and cavernous as an abandoned factory.
The other big touchstone here is New York no wave and punk-funk from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s — recalling a socio-cultural milieu in which, intriguingly, large old lofts and factory spaces also played a vital role. The fast, groove-laden percussion of Try Saying and Dodecahedron fits Mandy, Indiana in the lineage of acts like Liquid Liquid and James Chance and the Contortions.
It’s not exactly an easy album to love. However, so much attention has clearly been paid to setting the jet-black parameters of Mandy, Indiana’s visceral sound that you can’t help but be engrossed by this plunge into darkness.
