Broken Social Scene - Remember The Humans (Album Review)

“There's no need to hide here anymore,” Kevin Drew sings on Not Around Anymore, the opener from Broken Social Scene’s first album in nearly a decade. Crafted across two and a half years of recording, and underpinned by the loss of both Drew and returning producer David Newfeld’s mothers, ‘Remember The Humans’ is about memory rather than nostalgia, and learning to step out from its complex shadow.
At its best, the album channels that complexity into something euphoric. Relief is compulsive and joyful, Lisa Lobsinger’s sci-fi synths colliding with live and programmed drums in a blur of barely-contained chaos — it’s the kind of song that compels you to move regardless of where you are.
And I Think Of You drifts without apology into full-blown jazz interludes, Drew’s every “I think” burrowing into your mind like a recurring dream: “I think of you with the cold / I think of you in this bottom I find.”
The wobbles, when they come, are familiar ones. What Happens Now, for all the spectral, subconscious beauty of Leslie Feist's vocals drifting through the mix, loses itself in its own ambition. Closer Parking Lot Dreams is lovely but slight — a lullaby where a statement was needed, stepping quietly just when the album ought to be pulling you deeper in.
Twenty-plus musicians, nine years, and no shortage of grief, yet ‘Remember The Humans’ never buckles under the weight of any of it. It doesn’t scale the heights of ‘You Forgot It In People’, but it comes closer than anyone had a right to expect. Sometimes letting go really is how you move forward, especially for a band whose worst days still produce music worth remembering.
