The Lemon Twigs - Look for Your Mind! (Album Review)

There aren’t many contemporary bands quite as productive as The Lemon Twigs. Brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario might have expected to take some much-needed time off following the release of critical favourites ‘Everything Harmony’ (2023) and ‘A Dream Is All We Know’ (2024). Instead, the creative motors inside the pop-rock revivalists had other ideas.
They toured the world, released the standalone single I’ve Got A Broken Heart/Friday (I’m Gonna Love You) and guested on the new Thundercat record. Brian even had time to release a brilliant solo debut album called ‘Till the Morning’.
Somewhere amid all this activity was the creation of ‘Look For Your Mind!’, a self-produced sixth album that further sharpens their vintage-inspired songwriting skills and knack for crafting gorgeous indie-pop melodies.
The Lemon Twigs are in little mood to break the mould stylistically. The music is strikingly familiar yet never stale: their nostalgia-soaked ‘60s pop harmonies sound joyous and rich in their delivery.
The record flows wonderfully from the off. The title track opens the record with customary catchiness and a rougher guitar driven sound to hark back to ‘Help!’ era Beatles. It acts as a nice contrast to 2 or 3, a cute pop number about a man feeling inadequate and uncultured next to his partner.
Later, I Just Can’t Get Over Loving You makes its case for the record’s catchiest moment, the pair building towards a toe-tapping, euphoric climax. Fire and Gold throws something of a curveball, beginning as shimmering guitar-pop before expanding the band’s palette into psychedelic rock.
Into the second half and the tone changes up somewhat, entering dynamic ballad territory. The Brian Wilson-inspired Mean to Me offers a lighters-in-the-air mid-point breather. There’s a similar warm feel to the infectious Beach Boys-esque harmonies of You’re Still My Girl, while Joy takes things in a gorgeous autumnal folk direction.
‘Look For Your Mind!’ is another fantastic effort from the D’Addario brothers. The songwriting is so bright and undeniably hooky that, once again, they comfortably sidestep any accusations of pastiche.
