Bleach Lab - Close To The Flame EP (Album Review)

Bleach Lab have quickly proven themselves adept at capturing a mood. The dream-pop specialists delivered one of 2023’s most captivating debuts as ‘Lost in a Rush of Emptiness’ soundtracked singer Jenna Kyle’s mental state post-toxic relationship, and its follow up ‘Close to the Flame’ is similarly breathtaking at its best.

This EP finds the singer similarly worn out by love, battling self-doubt and in fear of losing herself, and the London-based band remain on top form for another masterclass in indie-rock goodness and rich, delicate guitar sounds.

Drown sets the scene nicely. “You look so pretty when you cry / makes them wanna break your heart to watch you die inside,” Kyle opens as she mourns all-consuming feelings for an indecisive partner.

Feel Something shows progression without abandoning the band’s raw emotional core. There are ominous ‘80s synths and an atmospheric backdrop to complement Louis Takooree’s gorgeous jangle, while Kyle vividly describes the exhaustive impact this poisoned relationship is having on her: “Baby you know I’m tired / and you’ve ruined my life / now I’m just burning alive.”

Later, In Your Arms finds Bleach Lab in a cheerier, more reflective mood as they change things up with some refreshing slow dance vibes and If I Could Be Anything is a spacious closer that brings together electronic tinges with emotive shoegaze. It’s fantastic way to exit, righting the ship after a title track that feels like a lull.

Kyle apparently wanted the songs on ‘Close to the Flame’ to sound like the end scene of a coming-of-age romance film, and they do. They are gentle, soul-baring and vulnerable, but also bitter, revelling in both intensity and warmth. Roll credits.
