A decade on from One Direction’s hiatus, all four surviving members of the era-defining boyband are releasing albums in the same year. But only one of them sounds authentically themselves. Where Harry Styles is playing the reluctant auteur, Louis Tomlinson the tryhard, and Zayn the cog in the pop machine, on ‘Dinner Party’ Niall Horan makes straightforward simplicity his superpower.
Named after the night he met his girlfriend, the album is an ode to long-term love in all its unglamorous, lived-in glory. Tastes So Good opens with colossal, Britpop-infused drums and Stone Roses-esque jangly guitars, Horan’s vocals sitting warmly above squelchy synths and a bass groove easy enough to dance around your kitchen to.
Elsewhere, Monochromatic’s shimmering guitars envelop effortlessly catchy pop hooks, while Little More Time’s sweet synths and overdubs give way to Horan’s strongest singalong yet. Flowers’ heartbeat-mirroring percussion and atmospheric keys leave you lounging in a hazy indie-rock daze.
The carousel of styles occasionally shows, for better and for worse. Boys Are Fun’s pick-and-mix combo of funky bass and country-leaning riffs gesture towards Post Malone’s recent output without quite committing, while Fighting Over Nothing, as charming as its lo-fi, reverb-soaked piano is, coasts where it could soar.
But the album’s final stretch reframes everything. Die If I Don’t palette is all folksy bouzouki, bodhrán and fiddle before End of an Era arrives, its lyrics rewritten in the wake of Liam Payne’s death. Its reverb-soaked guitars and deep-blue drums carry a sense of grief that no amount of polish could disguise. ‘Dinner Party’ is a snapshot of Horan at his most honest and, undeniably, his catchiest.
