Katy J Pearson likes to turn heads. Placing her eccentric vocals firmly at the forefront of her second album ‘Sound of the Morning’, the Bristolian artist provides a refreshing sound that feels uniquely her own.
Pearson’s music is country with a twist: stomping ‘80s themes pop up throughout, and there is a sway between biting folk-rock and yodelling blues, with syrupy-sweet melodies poured over reverberating lyrics.
Pearson’s debut album ‘Return’ burst onto our radar in 2020, with the twang of banjos and a hearty vocal delivery.
Enlisting fresh inspiration in producer Dan Carey, and the returning Ali Chant, who had worked with Pearson on her first LP, velvety chords and softened strings replace those plucky banjos on the opening title track.
The catchy Talk Over Town is next up, with fizzing indie-pop undertones, and Pearson unapologetically allows room for vibrancy and quirks in crafting an album that is curious and questioning, in both its music and lyrics. No matter how far she strays stylistically or how deep she ventures with her words, Pearson ensures that ‘Sound of the Morning’ remains comforting.
The most breathtaking examples of this balance are found on The Hour, a soul-stirring track that puts Pearson in the spotlight, and the swooping ballad Float, in which she chimes with Kate Bush flair: “Where is the part when things will actually start coming back again? 'Cause this feeling has no end, I don't wanna have to pretend.” By not shying away from the darkness, Pearson divulges personal messages on ‘Sound of the Morning’ that will resonate with listeners far and wide.
