Friendly Fires have announced a new album.
The long-awaited follow-up to 'Inflorescent' and their 'Offline' EP, both released in 2019, is titled 'Dig Deeper' and is set to arrive on January 15 via LAB Records. Frontman Ed Macfarlane said:
"This is some of the best music we’ve written. Doing something truly honest, putting it out there and hoping it connects with people – that feels like a huge leap of faith for us."
It follows a period of uncertainty for the St. Albans indie-dance duo, who experienced self-doubt during lengthy gaps between albums, with a fourth record seeming elusive for a while.
"We had 100 ideas that never saw the light of day and songs that were finished but still didn’t feel right," explained Macfarlane. “We were unsure about what the point of this was and what we’re about."
A creative reset followed, with the pair also revealing that the record was shaped by loss, including the deaths of a childhood friend and another close friend during the making of the album.
“We blasted back through the archives and reminded ourselves what Friendly Fires are all about,” guitarist Ed Gibson said. "There was definitely a conscious effort to come back to what we were about in the first place."
To celebrate the announcement, the band have shared the record's lead single, Magnetic, a propulsive offering that taps into the last flickers of summer before opening up into an infectious chorus. They said: “Attraction is a force so strong it can be beyond our control. What we want and what we should do aren’t always the same. Can you ever take charge over something so powerful?"
Friendly Fires returned last month with the single Lose All Your Friends, which also appears on the album, following summer festival appearances and a performance at Cardiff Castle supporting Two Door Cinema Club. They'll join the Northern Irish indie-pop trio at New York's Madison Square Garden and Boston's MGM Music Hall at Fenway later this month, before appearing at Bugged Out! at Drumsheds in London on October 10.
They've also confirmed a new intimate show at London’s Moth Club on September 24, followed by a run of European dates in January 2027. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (September 18).
