Lush, are a shoegaze alternative rock band, from London, United Kingdom consisting of Miki Berenyi (vocals, guitar), Emma Anderson (vocals, guitar), Phil King (bass) and Justine Welch (drums).
Formed in 1987, Anderson and Berenyi had been friend since school, having both played bass in separate bands they then both joined The Baby Machines, with Meriel Barham (vocals), Steve Rippon (bass) and Chris Acland (drums). The band decided on a name change to Lush, and Barham left the band in 1988. In 1989, the band signed to 4AD, and released several EPs. Their first full length album, ‘Spooky’ was released in 1992, and around the same time Rippon left the band to be replaced by Phil King. The follow-up album, ‘Split’ came in 1994, but was not so commercially successful, and their third and final album, ‘Lovelife’ came in 1996, and was hugely popular due to the bands change in style, more in line with their Britpop contemporaries. Later that year drummer Chris Acland committed suicide and the band did not perform again, disbanding in 1998. The band announced they had reformed in September 2015, with Elastica’s Justine Welch to drum with the band. 4AD are set to release a vinyl edition of the band’s best-of compilation, ‘Ciao! Best of Lush’ and a box set of past releases, as well as rarities, sessions and demos. You can catch Lush perform live when they play Manchester in April 2016, and two dates at London’s Roundhouse, in May - their first live shows in over 20 years.
